Dyshidrosis, also known as dyshidrotic eczema, is characterized by the appearance of small bubbles filled with liquid, which usually appear on the hands and feet and cause severe itching, which can last up to 3 weeks.
Generally, dyshidrosis is more common in the summer and begins to appear between the fingers, and over time, it evolves to the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet. Although the exact causes of this problem are not known, the worsening is usually related to excessive sweating.
Possible causes
The causes of dyshidrosis are not completely known, however, it is more frequent during the summer or in phases of emotional stress, seeming to be related to the excessive production of sweat, which causes skin irritation, as well as contact with substances with nickel and chromium. , detergents, and people affected with atopic dermatitis.
Thus, dyshidrosis is not contagious and, therefore, there is no danger of transmission, even if it comes in direct contact with someone else's skin.
What are the signs and symptoms
Dehidrosis can cause blisters to appear with a colorless liquid, usually located on the fingers, which can be associated with severe itching, redness of the skin and pain, especially when they are infected. In addition, skin peeling may also occur.
How the treatment is done
To treat this problem, the most important thing is to consult a dermatologist to start the treatment that is usually done with:
- Corticoid creams, which can be applied to the affected skin, in a thin layer, to help reduce inflammation and dry the blisters, accelerating their disappearance;
- Immunosuppressive creams, such as tacrolimus or pimecrolimus, which reduce the chances of the appearance of blisters on the skin, however, because they have effects on the immune system, increase the risk of skin infections;
- Phototherapy, which is a type of treatment used when creams and ointments do not show results, requiring the use of ultraviolet light to strengthen the skin, preventing it from becoming irritated and making it less susceptible to dyshidrosis.
In the most severe cases, the doctor may recommend making injections of botulinum toxin, also known as botox, to decrease the functioning of the sweat glands, reducing the excessive sweating that is one of the causes of dyshidrosis.
During the treatment, it is also recommended to make compresses or baths of potassium permanganate or 2% boric acid water, two to three times a day, until the lesions improve, in addition to providing adequate hygiene to the affected region with soap and water, apply moisturizer 2 to 3 times a day and avoid contact with skin irritating substances, such as cleansing products.
